THOR’S LOOK
Thor’s appearance, with his short hair and lack of the hammer, is also pulled straight from the comics. ‘The Unworthy’ Thor storyline to be precise.
DOCTOR STRANGE
It may not be a surprise to see Doctor Strange pop-up since a post-credits sequence in the Doctor Strange film had Thor and the Master of the Mystic Arts meeting up on Earth and discussing Odin’s whereabouts. It was a direct link to Thor: Ragnarok. But, just like in that scene, when Strange pops up in Ragnarok he’s wearing the same yellow gloves — in a nod to the classic Doctor Strange costume.
THE THROG
In one of the movie, we learn that as a child, Loki turned Thor into a frog, for fun. This refers us to as Frog-Thor or Thor-Frog or Throg.
HULK’S THING FOR SILK AND BEADS
Being in Sakaara, the Hulk occupied himself with luxurious rooms at the Grandmaster. And outside the battles in the gladiator arena, the Green Giant wears jewelry that sends us directly to the comic books. Namely – to the Ultimate Universe, to the comic “Wolverine Vs Hulk”, where the alter-ego of Bruce Banner is also exactly enjoying life and luxury unlike in the film.
SURTUR
A fire demon, Surtur is fixated on setting Ragnarok in motion, bringing about the end of days for Asgard. We first meet him in conversation with Thor, whom he has chained up and suspended from a great height in his fiery home, an extra-dimensional plane known as Muspelheim.
FAMILIAR HEADS
The Grandmaster Palace is a majestic building, towering above the entire Sakaar. On its facade are carved heads, which represent the heroes of the Grandmaster arena. Among them, there are several familiar characters of the Marvel universe. Alongside the latest champion Hulk, we see swamp creature Man-Thing, two-headed android Bi-Beast, Ares, the Olympian God of war and cybernetic Korbinite champion Beta Ray Bill, all of whom fought in the Sakaarian competition.
SKURGE’S SACRIFICE
The key scene for Skurge, whose role was played by Carl Urban, in which he decides to sacrifice himself to save the people of Asgard, is taken straight up from the comics. Look for her in Thor #362.
CONFUSION WITH THE RELATIONSHIP OF GODS
According to the film, Hela is the first daughter of Odin and, therefore, the sister of Thor and Loki. But in comics, Hela is connected by blood ties with the royal family of Asgard with but, the only difference is that in the original storyline she is Loki’s daughter.
IDEAL HAMMER MASKING
In the initial comic books about the Thor, disguise as Donald Blake, a physician who, with the help of a magic cane’s knock on the ground, turned into the Thunder Thunder God. The film has a small easter egg to the original: at the very beginning of the painting, when Thor and Loki are looking for Odin on Earth, Thor disguises himself in ordinary human clothes, and the Mjolnir Hammer turned into an umbrella. And when Thor returns to his form, he also knocks on the ground with this umbrella to reveal his divine essence.
VALKYRIE’S NUMBER
Valkyrie has fled Sakaar to keep a low profile as Scrapper #142. The number is significant. In The Incredible Hulk #142 released in 1971, the character’s persona is placed into a mortal called Samantha Parrington as an adversary for the Hulk.
POINT BREAK
The password to get into the Quinjet’s controls is ‘Point Break’. It’s a reference to Tony Stark’s nickname for Thor from The Avengers.
NEW ASGARD
After the fall of the city of Asgard, the Asgardians rebuilt it where it had fallen, and incorporated the remains of New York City into it, creating New Asgard. It is unknown how large it actually is, but it encompasses at least from what used to be New York State to Massachusetts.
